Whitethroat (Sylvia communis). Words and picture by Matt Sewell.
Another warbler that is not easy to spot but is so contrasting to our native warblers that he’s not hard to identify or name; like the Blackcap, his name is on the tin. Much bigger and thick-set than the rest of his warbling brothers, with a gruffer voice and sturdy song to match. He’s not here for long – summer only – travelling and seeking a temperate climate away from his home in Africa. Where I’m sure he fits in a treat.
Matt Sewell books and badges are on sale from the Caught by the River shop.
