Caught by the River

‘Flow’ zine – call for entries

24th April 2025

The Dartmoor Collective has published three open call photozines (Water, A Worked Landscape, and Linear), and staged three annual exhibitions showcasing work from a diverse range of artists working with Dartmoor as their theme.

Following on from the success of these events and publications, the collective has announced that submissions are now open for a fourth limited edition zine, titled Flow.

Dartmoor is a landscape which perhaps more than others has been defined and shaped by the process of flow.

Most of the major river systems in Devon rise within a few kilometres of each other in Dartmoor’s high central peat bog. Over millions of years these constantly moving waters cut the deep valleys which indent the outer perimeters of the moor. The action of weather and erosion mean that they also continue to reshape and forge new liquid paths across this unique, ancient but also fragile landscape.

The flow of human history and movement have similarly left their own fluid marks on the moor – from the first neolithic settlements through to the present-day uses of the moor for agriculture, leisure and utility. The only constant in Dartmoor’s long history has been this persistence of movement and change.

The Dartmoor Collective want to see bold, striking and wholly original work that interprets the concept of ‘flow’ in a uniquely creative way, offering fresh perspectives on Dartmoor and its landscape.

Some things to consider beyond traditional landscape images could be the abstract, the macro, patterns, textures, lines, marks, time, light and movement.

Submissions of up to four images per person across any medium (photography, painting, printmaking, drawing, etc.) are welcomed, from both professional artists and enthusiastic amateurs.

Flow will feature a collaboration with writer and artist Kirsteen McNish, whose specially commissioned words will wind their way through the pages like a river through the landscape.

Kirsteen writes a regular column for Caught by the River, and was long-listed for the Nan Shepherd Prize in 2023. She is interested in lesser heard voices and how that interpolates with place, care and landscape – be that rural or urban. She is also an events curator who works with writers, filmmakers, musicians and artists on special one-off events in unusual places.

Entries must be received before midnight on Friday 30th May 2025. Flow will be published in summer 2025.
