Klüb Gütenberg is a new monthly night of words and music co-hosted by Rough Trade Books and the Quietus website. In December the KG bill features British Sea Power’s East Sussex Jonathan Richman tribute band, Professor Tim Birkhead on birds and sex, Roy Wilkinson reading from his book Do It For Your Mum, plus other attractions.
Klüb Gütenberg
Monday 5 December
The Old Queen’s Head
44 Essex Road, London N1 8LN
7.30pm to 11pm
The Modern Ovens feature members of British Sea Power, the Brakes and the Tenderfoot and are an invigorating salute to the songs, style and ice-cream fixations of Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers.
Professor Tim Birkhead, a Caught by the River contributor and star of the recent BBC TV series Birds Britannica, will give a compelling talk on birdsong and avian mating strategy – from the sluttish hedge sparrer to the sex-criminal mallard duck.
After a bravura performance at last month’s Klüb Gütenberg, Andrew Harrison returns to give an audio-visual talk based on his book Love Music Love Food: The Rock Star Cookbook – a book published in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and centring on brilliant rock/grub images from celebrated food photographer Patrice de Villiers. Siouxsie Sioux, Brian May and beetroot-mad Alex Kapranos all feature.
Roy Wilkinson will kick off the readings at 8pm, with a selection from his recent family/rock/forestry memoir Do It For Your Mum. GQ: “Brilliant… The funniest rock book in years.”
Turntable selections from Ian Harrison of MOJO magazine and Earl Brutus.
Tickets £8 in advance and £10 on the night.
